Engine Oil System Performance Investigation

Project Objectives

Understand the low oil pressure concerns measured during track testing of RR-23 concept car.
Develop performance mitigations which are initially validated without running the engine.

JRM Actions

Develop a detailed understanding of the oil system internal and external to the engine.
Develop a test rig which will replicate engine oil system functionality across operating ranges.
Specify instrumentation which can measure, and log performance aligned with track data.
Run a test plan to calibrate the rig against engine, measure performance to identify failure modes.
Identify and measure changes to key components to achieve performance improvements

Results & Benefits

The test rig design and manufacture was all completed in house achieving flexibility and efficient working.
The build Integrated the oil cooler, dry sump, pump, and drive setup from the original engine.
Provided insights into the impact of configurations on pressure and volume flow.
Test results enabled implementation of component upgrades which achieved target performance.
